Every June, the NC State Optometric Society puts on a continuing education event in Myrtle Beach, SC. We attend nearly every year, and this year would be no exception. The only difference? Mr. Colin was coming too! His first beach trip! Yeah! He was so excited that he slept nearly the entire 4 hours it took us to get there :-) Lucky us, actually, that this boy loves his car rides and walks in the stroller.
The trip was special, not so much that it was Colin's first trip to the beach, but that he got to meet so many wonderful people that have been pulling for him from afar. Colin got lots of love, hugs and squeezes from a lot of wonderful friends and colleagues who prayed for him and asked about him during his tough times. We consider ourselves lucky to be in a profession that really has many people who care. One person in particular that Colin finally met was the Father of NC optometry himself, Dr. Jack Robinson. Papa Jack, as he's known to Colin, got a chance to meet our little Miracle. I knew Colin was tough, but when he wasn't intimidated by Dr. R after meeting him for the first time, that just solidified his toughness! ;-)
Our little buddy also got to experience his first professional dinners too! Kate P with Alcon treated Colin the first night. He was so polite, he didn't even order anything off the menu! All Colin asked for was some lovin' from Kate, in which she obliged (see photo) :-)
Lastly, we didn't hang out on the beach too much - 90+ degrees, sunny and humid will do that to you, but we managed to get some pics of Colin anyway. So cute.

The last several postings were to me a real diary of a loving and frustrated at times parents, who are going through the normal back and forth climbing of the mountain and the slipping down the valley and climbing the mountain again... What an interestingly complex parenting business is... and still there is something uncontrollably tempting and almost addictive about caring for little defenseless human beings that only sometimes are the reflection of ourselves but always the real hope that our existence here on Earth can be somehow prolonged through their lives.
It sounds almost unearthly to be satisfied with what God offers us every day, and we think we get a real taste of heaven when things go our way and our personal wants and desires for the time being are quite fulfilled. But when a child comes along, some things become clearer than ever... so when somebody asks us what makes us ultimately happy or at what point are we satisfied and no longer hungry for contentment, the answer is whenever our children are well and happy. Is it true or is it only true of some parents? My guess is that whenever things go smoothly and we don’t encounter real bumps on the road of parenting we adults do shift our focus on things of lesser importance, but when we are once in small or big way faced with our children’s well-being to be threatened we never lose our focus and nobody dares to question our priorities anymore.
Our lives are changed forever when we are accountable for life we took part in creating, we take parenting as a momentous and awesome privilege and God-given gift, not just some rite of passage, natural occurrence or forgive my expression an animal need to procreate.
I am so proud of you my friends. My admiration for your perseverance has no end and Bobby’s beautiful little expressions of love for his son are long to be cherished. Colinek has this absolutely exquisite face which goes beyond cute or handsome, he is like a precious Pearl that once it grabs your attention never lets you go. We feel privileged to share your joyous moments and we hear you out when you are at the ‘slipping down the valley’ stage... Both of which are familiar to many of us therefore easier to empathize with. So let that journey of yours keep unfolding itself in front of our very eyes...

I have been a quiet reader of this blog for many months. Love what you do. Kudos for all the hard work you do as a dad and for people like me to get a glimpse of the life of 'your miracle'!
Since I had just started my practice, I was reluctant to leave for the meeting in Myrtle Beach, but now I feel like kicking myself - missed seeing Mr. Colin!
Well, I'm sure I'll see him in Charlotte one of these days soon.
We all continue to pray for his health and for you both parents to have the strength to do what you do.
