Putting Mommy and Daddy to Work

So it's funny how life changes as we get older, and especially of course, when children enter the picture. Not even a year ago, buying a deep freezer wasn't even on the radar for us. Didn't even cross the mind. So cut to this week as Bessie is producing more milk (that would be Colin's mommy - and I refer to her that way very endearingly - I swear!), we find ourselves not only recognizing that we NEED a deep freezer, but that we're actually EXCITED about getting one!? How old are we? And what does this say about us? Scary. Downright scary. Throw any cool factor out the window for the Hamps. And today we started the process of finding a pediatrician for our little man. The interviews have begun. Two practices knocked out today. One tomorrow. Two Friday. Gone are the days of looking up the nearest doctor in the yellow pages, or whichever one in your area takes your insurance. Oh no no no. It's about knowing you've found the right practice and the right doctor for your baby...and yes, it's also about the Hamps being a little neurotic too - I'm blaming that on Ania (who else?) - I think she's finally rubbing off on me after all these years ;-)
Now, onto our amazing little boy: he's in the midst of a really good run right now. He's tolerating his feedings much more, and they've increased the amount to 1.2 cc's every 3 hours (quadruple where he started). His weight came up again, this time to 674 grams! Not quite fatty-status, but he's trying :-) And now that he's starting to fill out some, he's already hooked up with some girlfriends (3 primary care nurses). So when these particular nurses are on their shifts, they will be soley assigned to Colin. This will help establish continuity of care and since these nurses will get to know Colin better, they'll be able to identify more quickly any changes he may experience (not feeling well, hungry, angry, poopy diaper, didn't get my morning coffee, etc). And for good measure, we're going to ask a 4th nurse to also be his primary. This nurse is of the male variety though. The only one at Presby ICN. But he's excellent. Even better than Gaylord Focker :-)
Lastly, Colin wanted me to send his love to all his "fans"! He said he may even allow daddy to put up a new picture of him in the next couple days so be on the lookout...

Bobby I think you missed your true calling as a reporter. I love to hear the updates and trust me the coolness factor is pretty much gone for good! Soon you'll be dancing or singing in places like grocery stores! We love you lots - Julie

Bobby you missed your true calling as a reporter - you're doing such a great job. Also, count on the coolness to disappear completely - before you know it you'll be singing & dancing in places like Target and the grocery store, just because Colin likes it!

We love you guys - Julie

so glad (but so not surprised) to hear you're doing well! having been raised on an iowa dairy farm, all i can say about your daddy's new nickname for mommy is: "every woman dreams of getting a nickname like that!"....its a testament to mommy's great sense of humor that daddy's still walking upright!

i've got your photo on my frig...i can't wait till my favorite rockstar can autograph it for me!

Hello Bobby and "Bessie" and Collin,
We have been following your son's progress since your mom gave us the address. We are all praying for the new Hamp of the family. Your son also has his Grandpa Robert in heaven that is looking out for him. Yes, Bobby you are getting old, it not just us that are joining AARP, our children are following close behind. Tell Ania to keep up the good work on that milk production, even if she has been promoted to cow staus. Your cousins, Mary Grace and John

Thanks for keeping us posted with the good news. It's amazing how quickly we (as parents) bond to our children. Candace and I keep all three of you in our thoughts and prayers.

I'm glad that somebody else recognizes
your true gift for writing...
The birth of your son, or rather
its prematurity is making you,
daddy, pretty famous..
Seriously, Colin does not waste any
time by staying in the incubator; he already has
his little agenda going behind all those big ups
right after little 'hicups'...
So glad that mommy dearest sees the
big picture -- liters of milk stored in a deep
freezer, the best pediatrician in town for Colin,
etc.
We're very happy for you and grateful for the
progress Colin is making. God is good!

When they say parenting will change your lives, I guess they were talking about the freezer. Who knew?

Colin,

Hey buddy it's Brian...I had a late bedtime tonight...I got to hang with some of my Daddy's friends and watch the Packers/Cowboys game for a while. Man, do we hate the Cowgirls (that's what we call them around here). Nice work on upping your intake...I told you, "You Da Man".

Hey...don't let anyone tell you different...my Mom and Dad have the same kind of van that you have...it ROCKS!!! Vans, freezers, poop stories, stuffed animals...all of it is really cool. I'll catch up with you again soon I gotta go to bed. Cya buddy.
