1 Month Old Today!

Happy 1-month birthday, Colin! It's strange that on one hand, it seems like the last month has gone by so quickly, yet it also seems that Colin has been in the hospital a long, long time. Either way, it is a milestone day for our little man!
Colin also had a birthday wish come true today: his baseline eye exam revealed that there is no ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity)! His retina is not fully formed, which is expected, but to this point he is fine. His next exam will be in 2 weeks as there is still a chance he can develop it. For now, we remain gaurdedly optimistic that he will remain ROP-free.
Colin's prelimarly results on his lumbar puncture was great: no signs of bacterial meningitis! They did send the specimen off however for culture, and it may take another day or so to get the final results.
The blood culture also came back, and Colin has enterobacter aerogenes - a nasty little bug that may have been contracted from an IV line or by the fact that he was previously treated with antibiotics which made him susceptible to this infection. As a result, they took Colin off the vancomycin, but are keeping him on the gentamicin and cephadexin.
The good news is that he appears to be tolerating the treatment well. One sign that he's feeling better was during his eye exam this morning. His poor eye doctor left battered and bruised as Colin repeatedly karate-chopped him as he attempted to check Colin's eyes. Colin wasn't having any of it. But he settled down after the exam and went sleepies. We told you he was a fighter!

Happy Birthday! I am so glad to hear about the ROP because I know that was one that really worried you- especially given your professions. Please know that I am thinking about you and reading every day. Claire says her "God blesses" at night and we always make sure to include Colin!

Happy birthday Colinek. It seems like
somebody else like to call you that name too...

It was wonderful to read good news about
your eye exam results and that it was no-bacterial
meningitis perviously suspected.

Your family and friends are constantly
on your case.. so I hope you're not
experiencing a bad case of hick-up
( some Polish folks believe that when you talked about a lot, you may suffer from frequent hick-ups).

Man, if you stay that feisty ( which we kind
of like and respect), you will definitely find
your peers a bit wimpy
and, forgive my language, with no balls...

Stay okay little guy and remember, you got
to fight that prematurity thing little longer...
and with the same vigor and style.

We love you, my son, and because of you,
we adults are becoming better people
today.

God is on your side,
so you don't have to do it alone..

P.S. By the way, say 'hello' to all the preemies,
you know, your flat-mates..
