Lab Results

Well, yesterday's labs came back and there were 2 significant findings: 1. the bilirubin levels are still elevated, slightly more than before, and 2. the hematocrit had dropped further. Because of the bilirubin, the doctors will start Colin on actigall as early as Wednesday to start working on the jaundice. Regarding the hematocrit, it appears Colin is starting to produce red blood cells on his own, just not fast enough. As a result, he had 2 more blood transfusions yesterday, bringing his total to 7 blood and 2 platelet transfusions. It's hard not to be worried about the fact he's having trouble producing red blood cells, but the prevailing thought is that it's because he's still so small. In time, this will hopefully resolve itself.
Of course, when they transfuse him, they have to discontinue his feedings and replace it with fluids only. He was one unhappy baby last night because we could tell he wanted food due to his crying and fussing. They say parents can eventually tell the difference between various types of cries. Well, we've got down the "I'm hungry" cry. It was tough watching him be upset like that since he's usually such a sweet, calm baby. It took him quite a while to calm down, but he eventually did. They should start back feedings today once the labs show he responded well to his transfusions. Once they start back, they'll increase his overall volume of milk slightly, and begin additional electrolytes (sodium and potassium chloride) which will help further his growth. Right now, Mr. C will take just about anything. He's a hungry man! :-(
